The recently announced high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor will outperform the Apple A13 System-on-a-chip (SoC) of the iPhone 11 and its siblings in terms of performance, Android Authority said. The statement is based on extensive testing of previous models and benchmark testing with a Qualcomm reference device.
Information was confirmed by a Redmi representative on the Weibo social network.
As Gary Sims, a site expert, explains, it is often said that Apple is always two generations ahead of processors available for the Android operating system. An example of this is the Snapdragon 855 (the top of the line 2018), which has performance similar to the Apple A11 of the iPhone 8 – a CPU released in 2017.
But some factors are responsible for changing this scenario. Firstly, the performance difference between Apple A12 and Apple A13 was small, at around 5%. This data was captured with Android Authority's proprietary benchmark test, the Speed Test G. Because it is not publicly distributed, there is no way for manufacturers to optimize their smartphones to circumvent it.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm was able to derive a 20% performance improvement in real use cases. Snapdragon 865 was launched in early December 2019, but is not yet on any smartphone. Meanwhile, however, the manufacturer allowed the use of Qualcomm Reference Device (QRD) for publications to make their own benchmark tests.
Speed Test GX 2.0 from Android Authority can be measured by the time taken to complete each section in seconds. The shorter this time, the better. The first part, which tests GPU performance, took 36.6 seconds on the Snapdragon 865, while the Apple A13 took 40 seconds. For reference, the Snapdragon 855 completes this part in 45.3 seconds.
The story is different when it comes to graphics performance. The iPhone 11 Pro Max still has the advantage, taking 14.5 seconds to complete the test portion of the 3D Unity graphics engine. Meanwhile, the Qualcomm Reference Device needed 16.9 seconds.
