The performance of the new Exynos 990 chip is no better than Snapdragon 865 and this is one of the reasons why South Korea Samsung chose to launch the Qualcomm-equipped Galaxy S11 in more regions. The company is not happy with its SoC and according to recent information, the new Exynos 1000 is being developed to offer better performance, efficiency and other features.
Upcoming Exynos will be powered by CPUs developed by ARM
Since it was confirmed that Samsung was shutting down its own CPU development facility in Austin, information about the upcoming Exynos family chips is sparse.
Now a source allegedly connected to industry insiders says that Samsung is working on the Exynos 1000 and that this chip would apparently be produced using the 5nm process.
Since the new chip will not use Samsung's Mongoose custom cores, it should use ARM Cortex-A78 cores. According to the source, the Exynos 1000 will have an eight-core configuration – four for performance and the rest focused on efficiency. The clock frequencies are still unknown.
Samsung's Exynos line was slower compared to Qualcomm offerings when it comes to GPU as well. It has not been confirmed at this time which GPU will be used by the Exynos 1000, but it may be either ARM's Mali-G78 or even one based on AMD's RDNA architecture.
For those who don't remember, Samsung and AMD entered into a partnership in June this year involving licensing of patents related to AMD RDNA architecture and graphics chip related intellectual property. The first products developed on the basis of this partnership may be introduced in 2021.
Previous information also indicates that Samsung could eventually develop custom GPUs and a gaming-focused smartphone. In addition, the Exynos 1000's advanced 5nm process may also mean that it will directly face competitors such as the alleged Kirin 1000 or Kirin 1020 and even Qualcomm's Snapdragon 875 for performance and efficiency.
It is important to note that it is too early to comment on Samsung's plans and information about the new chip may be just rumors. Still, an Exynos 1000 chip with a custom GPU can be quite interesting.
