The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 is a mid-segment Android phone. Its main highlight is the retractable front camera, which frees the entire front area to be occupied by the screen. Other relevant features include its cost-effective components and a large battery.
Design and Screen
The Y9 Prime 2019 is a large cell phone, with 6.5 inches it is the type of device that will please those who like a smartphone with a wide screen but also see no problem in the larger size that makes its handling a bit harder especially with just one hand. Because of its large battery, it is also a rather heavy device.
The Y9 Prime 2019 has virtually the entire front area taken by the screen without any obstruction
Its main highlight is the thin edges around the screen and especially the lack of a notch or missing area at the top. This is possible because this model has a retractable camera system that makes the camera "jump" only when needed. The mechanism is quite agile, and in our tests it seems quite resistant to misuse.
The LTPS screen has a good quality level, with good definition and color at regular levels. Not quite up to some IPS LCD and especially AMOLED models, which bring much brighter colors and more contrasts, but the level is satisfactory enough for comfortable use of the device.
The device has a P2 connection, great news for those who use wired headphones, and the speaker is also located at the bottom. Unfortunately here we have the average experience: just a box, easily muffled depending on how you hold the device and with only acceptable quality. Just turn up the volume to hear some audio distortion.
Otherwise, the device has some typical savings in this segment, so we don't see features like induction charging or water resistance here. Other absences, now a little more unusual, is the lack of NFC and also support for 5.0GHz networks. Most handsets in this price range have these two features, with another curious exception being the Zenfone Max Pro M2, which also has a large battery.
Performance comes from Huawei's own chip, the Hisilicon Kirin 710F, an intermediate 12-nanometer model that delivered satisfactory performance throughout our tests. For everyday use we had no problems using multiple applications and switching between them, being a good device for daily activities. The good amount of RAM (4GB) is relevant to ensure that even if you open many apps, the device shows no signs of slowing down.
The phone does well in everyday use, and switches well between apps thanks to a good amount of RAM
Game performance is sufficient, but not too far
For games and the graphics chip can handle, but not the most robust. Call of Duty was able to play smoothly, but with minimal graphics and average frame rate, holding close to 60fps most of the time. For PUBG Lite the ideal is to aim at intermediate quality, and apart from any slight locks in the early stages of the match, the performance is satisfactory.
The Y9 Prime 2019 features a set of three rear cameras. The main one features a 16MP wide-angle lens with f / 1.8 aperture, while the secondary lens is an ultra wide-angle 120º angle with an 8MP sensor. The third camera is not for direct use by the user: it features a 2MP sensor to provide depth information, serving the very popular background blur effect.
When in a favorable lighting situation, the Y9 Prime does well, with good colors and contrasts, as well as good definition and detail capture. Highlight for the contrast and vivid colors of the ultra wide angle camera.
Obviously a mid-range device is not of the level of quality that more expensive models result from the savings made, but the device does not fare so badly in darker scenes, and maintains an acceptable level of quality. The quality variations between the two cameras are acceptable, and as you can see from the comparison below, there is not much lens distortion.
A very interesting feature is intensive postprocessing for photos in darker environments, the "night mode". He does well to do a long exposure and especially to see the increase in saturation and contrasts to deliver more vivid colors, as you can see side by side.
In videos the Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 outperforms the average. Stabilization is digital only, but it is enough to help make a video that is made with a little carelessness or a lot of movement acceptable.
The Y9 Prime does very well when it comes to staying away from the power outlet, the merit of the 4000 mAh battery. In our tests this device can be almost two full days without the charger. In heavy use it survives a full day without difficulty, showing that it is an excellent choice for those who want a reliable device and do not want to worry about having a charger always at hand.
The Y90 Prime is very good at battery life.
In charging it performs well despite the large battery. In 15 minutes using the charger that came in the box, we had a recharge of 11%, a good result for a device with a large battery. Speaking of recharging, despite the glass back it has no induction charging, and it is worth mentioning that the charger present in the box does not use the Brazilian standard.
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019, like other Chinese devices, uses Android (at least for now). But on the interface of Google is applied to EMUIU, an outfit that changes the look and some features of the system.
Most of the time the system is very similar to Android that many are used to. The interaction is done through the three traditional buttons "home", "back" and "multitask", while at the top we have the notification bar and shortcuts for activating sensors and functions like the flashlight. Much of the interface has just a slightly different look and, in my opinion, somewhat dated, with several of the screens deserving a reread for cleaner interfaces and larger, lighter icons. Importantly, this is a matter of personal taste, which does not heavily interfere with usability.
EMUIU has a somewhat dated look
Fortunately, the phone does not come loaded with an excess of preinstalled software, the popular bloatwares. It comes with a manager that monitors hardware usage, giving alerts when an app is running out of battery or memory, for example, a suite of utility apps such as tape recorder, flashlight and compass, and software to download themes. Nothing that takes up a lot of space or even bothers you.
Just keep in mind that the monitoring app can be a little aggressive and "tease" with other software, such as the Accubattery we use to monitor battery usage and that didn't work properly on this model. But most of the time we had no problems, with only occasional complaints from the monitoring app about the high power consumption of my podcasting app, something I already knew.
The Huawei Y9 Prime is a good mid-range device, delivering a good screen, regular cameras and good performance.
Its strengths are its excellent autonomy, being able to spend a long time without recharging and certainly eliminating the worry about a backpack / bag charger.
But undoubtedly its great differential is even the wide screen and unobstructed, thanks to the retractable system of the front camera. With that we have a device with more than 6.5 inches of display fully available for games and videos, something that can be used to. In this price range that is sold in Brazil, around $ 1,200, he is one of the few who can deliver this experience with a screen free of cutouts and with such thin edges.
The Y9 Prime 2019 is a good phone and its big advantage is the pop-up screen, leaving the front free to be taken only by the large display.
In other respects it doesn't disappoint, with a good amount of internal memory and RAM, and I just don't like the EMUIU that deserves improvements in design, but that doesn't compromise the use. It's good to keep in mind that there are models with more performance on rivals like Xiaomi, for example, or with brighter color screens like Moto One Vision or Galaxy M30, but if you want a wide screen device and don't want to miss a thing With carvings, this is the most interesting phone in this price range.
