Four months after the launch of Pixel 4, Google is already working hard on the next generation of its phone. It will still be a while before the Pixel 5 is revealed publicly, but the Front Page Tech website has now released a rendered image that shows the possible design of the new device.
The date was confirmed on Twitter by CEO Sundar Pichai
The rendered image, which supposedly comes from the site's “trusted source”, is apparently based on CAD files from one of the initial three prototypes of the Google Pixel 5 XL.
Google usually has several teams working on different designs before deciding what the final design will be in April or May, which means that this particular model may not be a representation of the device that will hit the market.
This strategy is a common practice among smartphone manufacturers. As we saw last year, Apple had two radically different designs for the iPhone 11 Pro before eventually choosing the design of the smartphone we know today.
If Google opts for this design for the device, it will represent yet another drastic change. In this supposed new design, the square module with the cameras used in the Pixel 4 should give way to something much bigger and different in the Pixel 5, as you can see in the image above.
The new design looks a little strange, to say the least, but it ultimately represents a more unique direction for the company. It also allowed for the incorporation of an extra sensor, bringing the total number of cameras to three.
At this point it is not yet clear what specifications Google is planning for the camera system, but a set with an ultra-wide-angle camera, a primary camera and a telephoto camera may be a possibility.
Rendered images of the front of the alleged Pixel 5 XL have not been released, but at this point it is believed that it should not be much different from the Pixel 4. Regarding the chipset, rumors say that the Pixel 5 and Pixel 5 XL will come equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865.
Pixel 5 and Pixel 5 XL should be officially presented by Google during the Google I / O 2020 event, which will be held in early May by the company. If this is confirmed, both should reach the market a few months after its announcement.
