Seven people were killed and at least 20 injured on Thursday in a bus crash in India.

The vehicle crashed into a gorge in northern India's Jammu and Kashmir territory, according to local police.

The accident occurred in Rajouri district when a bus from Surankote to the city of Jammu pulled off the road and crashed into a ravine.

"More than seven passengers are dead and between 20 and 25 people are injured in the accident in Lamberi, near Siot, Rajouri district," a Rajouri police official quoted by newspaper Hindustan Times.

Police believe the accident happened due to driver negligence.
