The chamber was accidentally discovered by archaeologists who were working in a room and tripped over an opening between the two spaces.

Archaeologists who were working on the restoration project of the Domus Aurea (Golden House), the palace of Emperor Nero, found a hidden underpass, second the Science Alert.

According to the media, the discovery was made when archaeologists were working in one of the chambers and turned on bright lights that illuminated an opening, revealing a frescoed room.

The walls of the place are decorated with depictions of mythical creatures such as centaurs and pagan deities, as well as a "solitary and silent sphinx".

"After nearly twenty centuries in the dark, the Sphinx room… Portrays the atmosphere of the years of the Principality of Nero," said park director Alfonsina Russo.

Excavation work is being carefully considered to avoid damage to the complex.
