The State Department of Finance and Planning of Sao Paulo (Sefaz) seized 30,000 items in a Black Friday operation, the products were estimated at $ 3 million. Among the devices that were seized were tablets, 200 cell phones, more than 1000 smartwatches from a "Chinese manufacturer", as pointed out in the official publication of SP Farm Portal. Although the brand was not mentioned, it is evident from the photos that most of the products are from Xiaomi, including smartphones like Redmi 8, Mi 9 SE, Mi 9 Lite, Redmi Note 8 Pro, Mi 9T Pro, Mi 9T.

The equipment was taken from 159 points in 45 municipalities of the state of São Paulo, 54 establishments were not found in their registration addresses and will have their state registration suspended. The products were seized for tax evasion and required proof of ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Provision of Services).

"The taxpayers found were notified and will have to prove the origin of the traded goods and in situations with importation, in case of non-verification, the companies will be assessed and must collect the ICMS levied for the State of São Paulo."

The importation of products from China and their regulation are the subject of fierce discussions about the Brazilian system of legislation and raise questions about the "Brazil cost", which takes into account the amount of taxes applied to products sold in the country. Many sellers are tempted to circumvent legalization costs to get a larger share of profit, something that is not just for small traders.
