Checking in for international flights just got easier: American Airlines has launched the passport scanning function in its mobile app. American now offers the passport chip scanning function, transmitting document information more securely from the Near Field Communication (NFC) chip. This allows passengers to go directly to the departure gate for international flights without having to have their documents checked again by a customer service agent.
"We are constantly adding features to our app to make travel easier and worry-free for our customers. Mobile passport scanning removes a longer check-in step, giving our customers a more streamlined experience for international flights."
Maya Leibman, Chief Information Officer of American
Passengers on international flights who check in via the app currently have their passports checked again at the airport. This step is necessary even if the passenger has sent a photo of their passport through the app. With this new feature, the customer can enter passport information and scan the document with an iOS or Android device. The app offers easy instructions for the process.
Mobile passport scanning is the latest addition to a number of features American has implemented in its app to make traveling easier. New features include boarding notifications, Siri shortcuts (artificial intelligence program for the iOS system) and a dark mode option. American has also offered new services to enhance travel experiences, including biometric international boarding, 3D virtual aircraft online tours, a new self-service menu design to simplify the check-in process and a better family seating approach that ensures that adults and children under 14, when traveling together under the same reservation, feel together.
